The Importance of Maintenance

  1. Very well stated. I worked with a number of software engineers, the best of which all had one thing in common — they had all rebuilt car engines in their youth. (Granted I’m talking about a very small sample size and as time marches on my example will fade into obscurity.) But they all tended to look at problems in a particular way that greatly benefitted their design and troubleshooting skills. The designer who I worked the most closely with found particular enjoyment in automating test procedures for his own code that he would further develop based on his own “failures”, ultimately resulting in very impressive end products.

I grew up working on my own bicycles and eventually my motorcycles and cars as well. These days I sometimes find myself watching videos of those who work on older sports cars from marques that are admired by many. While the cars often strike me as things of beauty, I often find myself thinking that the engineers and designers involved with creating the cars sure didn’t give much thought (if any) to the individuals who would actually be working on them later on. Of course this applies to any number of other things, including typewriters.
