My Underwood Typewriters and a Typeface Mystery

  1. I do think that's an Underwood peculiarity. I believe it represents a handwritten 8: you'd start by writing an S and then complete the 8, and the beginning and end of your curve would cross. But it doesn't look very convincing or attractive!

  2. Underwood Distinctive Elite/Pica (marked DE/DP on the slugs) has the little tick and this typeface is commonly found on Underwood typewriters from this period. I’ve no idea when it was introduced, but it continued to be used into the 1960s.
