Sadly, there seems to be no alternative to plastic for waterproof clothing. Sadly again, cotton does not seem to be comfortable. Sadly yet again, Nylon is not environment friendly.
"We look before and after, and pine for what is not", though that is usually interpreted to mean something else, in a much different context.
