  2. Coincidentally I recently acquired an SM8 and SM5 on subsequent days. The SM5 was missing a similar link on the top left key. I made a link from a small bit of galvanized wire, but it was very difficult to get it in. Despite the soft platen on the SM5, it is still very loud, but the action is so smooth! I resurrected the SM5 from a parts machine basically, as the PO had removed every key spring, the feet, and there were numerous springs hanging loose. It was a challenging project but I have saved another typewriter, for now. I think it will go for sale to someone who will use it. It's fun to collect but they do take up a lot of room.
