I'm glad you found your way to Shute. Grant Petersen wrote about him fairly frequently in the Riv Reader about ~25 years ago, which was my introduction to his work. "Trustee" is maybe his best, but "A Town Like Alice" also sticks out in my memory as being worth seeking out.
