Mow With Less

  1. We have a very small lawn, and several years ago I got rid of the gas-powered push mower and got a new manual reel mower. It does the job, but the problem I see is if I let the grass grow too high, the reel can’t cut them, instead the blades just fold under the reel. So I have to ensure I don’t let the lawn get too long.

  2. I grew up with an ancient reel-type push mower and I hated it with a burning passion. In my memory it was essentially solid rust, the (possibly wrought-iron?) blades were dull as river rock, it weighed a ton, jammed constantly, and was never stable on our sloping yard on the side of a hill. I am sure that my parents still own this thing.

Now I live in a fourth-floor walkup and to this day I have never used a power mower.

  3. If you were a total luddite you'd be sharpening your scythe and getting practice on swinging it! :)
