Anon, Didn't anybody ever teach you that the first rule of Flat Club is than no one talks about damn long it's been since they've had a flat? That said, I run pretty tough tires these days and I think my last flat was on one of my commutes in Eugene.
As for split rims, hell yeah, and I saw plenty when I was working in bike shops in the Seattle area. I had a rim split in my kitchen right before a ride (I'd just topped out the pressure in the tires). See and old tour report of mine called "An October Adventure" for that one. And I had a rim split in Montana on my 2005 GRead Divide Race and you can read about that in The Way of the Mountain Turtle.
When was your last flat tire? Have you had a rim split?
