I think duels have a purpose. It’s easy for a leader to not like another leader and send in a bunch of innocents to kill each other over the point. Would those leaders be so anxious to war it out if they had to settle the difference with a duel? I think not.
I have had fantastical thoughts of a previous, over tanned bombastic buffoon taken in the forest armed with a knife. The opponent was in the same forest similarly equipped. The one that emerges wins. It will never happen, but it sure is fun to think about.
So, yes, I think duels have a purpose in our “modern” society.
