Hi Kent, great idea to use the platen of the Champion. I wonder if the rack of the Junior machine would be have worked as a replacement for the rack of the Champion? If the two racks are different pitch, it won't, of course, unless the escapement and pinion are also changed to match the rack. Take care!
The Champion is elite pitch and all my other Underwoods are pica, so no-go on a rack transplant unless, as you noted I swapped over the escapement and pinion. But the Junior is my favorite, so I wouldn't want it to be a parts donor.
