1939 Underwood Leader

  1. On 1950s and 1960s Underwood’s, that is a standard number 8 in the “Distinctive” Elite/Pica typeface, which would ordinarily be denoted as DE or DP on the slugs. I don’t know when that typeface was patented, but the little flourish would seem to be an Underwood feature.

  2. The little piece extending out on the numeral 8 is called a "hat." I have an Olivetti-Underwood Lettera 32, made in Canada, that has the same feature. There are more versions of these decorations as I recently found out when I looked at a discussion on typefaces.
