It is, perhaps, a comment on the times that when one speaks the truth one ends up being grumpy.
The younger generation seems more cheerful (when not looking at their smart phones), but that may be because the present is all that they have seen (the present state of affairs, ie).
On the other hand, this is perhaps what the older generations say at all periods in history. Does not seem like it, though.
We all get like this! I was just trying to arrange getting another car. My bicycle is looking so good by comparison! Even in winter.
